Overcoming Sex Addiction with Nate Larkin
Lust kills love. Porn and sex addiction can wreak havoc in an intimate relationship and it can affect someone personally when they are entrenched in the addiction.  In our culture, it can be easier to chase after lust than to find real love. In this podcast, Nate Larkin shares how he overcame his twenty-year struggle with sexual addiction. Even if you are not struggling with sex addiction, this podcast can help you know how to run free from feelings of guilt and shame. *Today’s Speaker – Nate Larkin *Nate Larkin knows the pressure to live up to a public persona. He knows what it's like to have a secret that can destroy a career. He knows what it's like to quit. And He knows what it's like to find healing, deep friendships, and hope. Nate has a story that unfortunately too many people can relate with.  He was the perfect role model growing up. Everything looked great on the outside. But inside Nate, a battle was raging. He married Allie on his graduation day and soon enrolled in Princeton Theological Seminary. He graduated from Princeton with a major in Preaching and was awarded the Preaching Prize. Within two years, Nate was the senior pastor for a new non-denominational church in South Florida. Observers saw a wise and godly man of God, dedicated to church and home. But Nate’s religious persona was crumbling from the inside out. After just five years in the ministry, Nate made the choice to quit. An obsession had developed into a virulent addiction to pornography and commercial sex. His decision to abandon vocational ministry was driven primarily by private despair about his moral failures and the fear of public exposure. Eventually, Nate and Allie moved to Franklin, TN. After years of praying, fasting, pleading, and repenting in private, Nate finally found help for his sex addiction—in the form of authentic friendship and the safety of a 12-step recovery group.  As he worked through the 12 steps, Nate began to see life differently. Nate finally understood why a 12-step group had accomplished what solitary prayer and fasting could not. God designed the Christian life as a team sport! As he began to live in this new model of Christianity, Nate’s circle of friends expanded to include a large group of men with different weaknesses, addicts and potential addicts of every description, united by a common faith and a need for real companionship. So in 2004, several of these friends formed a mutual aid society for Christian men called the Samson Society. Within the safety of the Samson Society, honest friendships have taken root and men are finding new power in their faith. Nate, who drafted the Society’s charter and designed its first meeting format, has written a book about his experiences entitled Samson and the Pirate Monks: Calling Men to Authentic Brotherhood, which was published by Thomas Nelson in February 2007. (He is also the author, with Darrell Waltrip, of Sundays Will Never Be the Same). As of 2012, more than 250 local Samson Society groups are functioning in the United States, and others have started in other countries. A social networking website has been established to connect men who do not have access to a local meeting. Nate loves talking to men about their need for community and how they can overcome struggles together.  *Website*: *You’ll Learn * * How to know if you have a sex addiction * The key to overcoming sex addiction * How to help a spouse struggling with sex addiction *It Starts With Attraction Ep. 029: ** Overcoming Sex Addiction  **with Nate Larkin *

233: I’m Codependent. Now What?
“Codependency.” You finally have a word to describe why you’ve been feeling so overwhelmed and drained your whole life. And while I’m not the biggest fan of labels, sometimes having a term to describe your experience can be the thing that makes all the pieces fall into place and the light bulb go off. But having a “label” is only the first step. That’s why one of the biggest questions I get asked, especially around codependency, is “So, what do I do about it?” Codependency is something I understand extremely well, because it was a constant companion for the first half of my life. I know how painful it can be and the feelings of regret that can arise when you discover you’re codependent. But I also know codependency doesn’t have to be the end of the story. You CAN change this pattern in your life, and in this episode, I’m telling you exactly how to do that. Listen to discover: * What codependency is * Signs of codependency * What do next to start getting healthy * 5 practical steps to transform codependency You didn’t choose codependency, but starting today, you can choose to end it! Instead of feeling regret for time lost, look at today as the first day of the rest of your life. I’m here to help you take that next step into health and freedom! “If you’re human, you have things to work on. Healthy people work on their stuff.” - Michelle Chalfant “Nobody throws us in the victim chair. We choose it.” - Michelle Chalfant “You have to take care of you and your life. It’s no one else’s job.” - Michelle Chalfant “There’s a fine line between being really caring and codependent, and when you’re codependent, you can't see that line.” - Michelle Chalfant Resources 30-Day Journaling Challenge The Adult Chair Private Facebook Group Green Chef $80 off your first box + free shipping More Adult Chair The Adult Chair Website The Adult Chair Membership The Adult Chair Workshop The Adult Chair Coaching Certification Stay Connected Instagram: Facebook: The Adult Chair Facebook Group: *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. This is your host Neil Sattin. Now, I don't know about you, but I haven't managed to live a conflict-free life. In fact, it seems like it can be pretty easy to experience conflict with people in the world around us. And it comes up in our relationships, it comes up at work, it comes up with family, it comes up with your kids, and so I was tantalized when a former guest, Erica Fox, reached out to tell me about a colleague and friend of hers who had just come out with a new book called Optimal Outcomes: Free Yourself From Conflict at Work, at Home and in Life. And I thought, "Conflict-free, that sounds pretty good." 'Cause conflict adds a lot of stress. And you know I went through a divorce about a year ago, and that process wasn't conflict-free, and my divorce before that wasn't conflict-free. And in fact, there are all kinds of opportunities to experience rocky relationships. And this is particularly vexing for me because I put so much energy into trying to get it right and trying to master communication skills and bring openness and understanding to all of these conversations with people that, not all the time, I don't want you to think that my life is just riddled with conflict, but occasionally blow up in my face. Neil Sattin: So I'm excited to have today's guest here with us to talk about this process of totally reframing the way that you see conflict, how you handle conflict, and how to escape from those perpetual conflicts that seem to be unresolvable. We'll see how we can go from unresolvable to conflict-free in today's episode. Our guest's name is Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler. She's the author of Optimal Outcomes as I just mentioned, and she is also the Founder and CEO of Alignment Strategies Group, which is an organization that is focused on creating health in other organizations and corporations. And on top of that, she teaches a popular course on conflict resolution at Columbia University. So let's dive right in. Before we do, if you want a transcript of today's episode, just visit Or as always, you can text the word "Passion" to the number 33444 and follow the instructions. Okay, that's it. Jen Goldman-Wetzler, it's such a pleasure to have you here with us today on Relationship Alive. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler: It's great to be with you today, Neil. Neil Sattin: Let's just dive in with... I'm curious to know how you... How would you define the way that you look at conflict? How is that different from typical conflict resolution? Why is this not your grandmother's conflict resolution, or maybe your Harvard negotiation program's conflict resolution? Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler: Right. It definitely isn't. It is built on that though. My work in conflict freedom comes out of doing the work of conflict resolution with people on the ground in the Middle East, Israelis and Palestinians, with corporate leaders in pharmaceutical companies and healthcare companies and financial services, professional services. And at some point, about five years into doing that work, I noticed that conflict didn't always get resolved. The methods that we've been teaching for the last 40 years around resolving conflict work well in many situations, but in some situations, they just don't work. And when I came to that realization, I realized I wanted to dig in and try to understand, "Why not?" And most importantly, "What could we do to free ourselves from those conflict loops?" Those situations that just seem to go around and around and around and never get resolved, no matter what we do, no matter how well we apply the latest conflict resolution methodology. And so it took me about 13 years to get this book written, and it's based on five years of deep research in the realm of emotions like humiliation and conflict. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler: So the main difference really is... Interested in reading a transcript of the rest of this episode? Click here to download it!

148: [Personal Story] A Triggered Life – Alba
Alba Soto is my guest on this episode. She shares her ‘triggered life’ experience, which still haunts her today. Her trauma began at the age of 3 at the hand of family members. Alba shares her addiction to masturbation as a coping mechanism which fueled her sense of guilt. She shares how she managed to escape this life and the twist of events that led her abusers back to her. People pleasing was Alba’s symptom of her trauma, always aiming to be a ‘good girl.’ In an eye opening observation, Alba explains that trauma is the gateway drug to addiction and that any form of addiction is a coping tool. Her journey progresses into adolescence and adulthood, where she found herself in similar situations even in her personal relationships, being raped and involved with toxic partners. Not knowing who she really was, was a huge obstacle in finding her confidence and with the help of her now husband, Alba reveals how he played a role in helping her find herself and express her emotions and thoughts openly in a safe place. When she experiences a ‘ triggering’ moment, Alba is now comfortable enough to talk about it and this, she shares is a liberating tool. Alba currently still experiences trauma triggers and reveals how powerful having a voice is when she experiences these triggers. Background Alba Soto is the founder of Alba Soto TLC. She is a positive and resilient trauma survivor, dedicated to helping single mothers who have suffered from sexual trauma. As a certified trauma life coach, Alba helps single mothers get unstuck by applying her unique principles of active healing. Through personal experience she has learned that ” Without tools, Trauma Rules.” This is what led her to share the tools that turned her from accepting people who took advantage of her to now only accepting healthy and reciprocal relationships. These tools facilitate active healing and help women find their voice and reclaim their power. Albas vision is to create a community of resilient women through my sisters circle community, ” Better TogetHER,” a sacred space to connect with other like spirited resilient women who are ready to move towards a life that is free of shame, guilt and anger.
