we need to ask better questions
Play • 39 min

It seems to be a sort of accepted thing...the most strident homophobes are closeted gays! the idea has never sat super well with me. so i found a super smart person to talk to us about why its a crap idea. we also spend some time talking more broadly about how our society does a terrible job of studying questions related to marginalized groups.

here's some folks doing good work with marginalized folks in research if you're interested!

Black Trans History and Futures
For Black History Month, Imara brings us an episode focused on honoring Black, trans histories and understanding how they can help us envision and build toward bright Black, trans futures. She’s joined by the incredible artist, filmmaker, and scholar Tourmaline, whose passion for understanding trans histories is the singular reason the world knows so much about Marsha P. Johnson. Tourmaline discusses how understanding and reimagining the lives of trans people from the past fuels her creativity, the importance of freedom dreaming, and how engaging with Black trans histories can help us find ease in the present while allowing us to build to the futures we envision. For Trans Joy, Imara welcomes Jamie Freya Knott, owner of the organic and vegan soap company Shop Jamie Freya, to talk about the freedom and control she’s found through becoming an entrepreneur. Leigh & Gretchen
Episode 34: Queers in the Civil Rights Movement
For today’s episode, Leigh is joined by return guest host, Aubree Calvin, to commemorate Black History Month by telling the stories of some folks who made contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s whose queerness has been overlooked or erased, and the ways in which the tremendous work done by Black activists was absolutely essential to the evolution of LGBTQ rights actions. Listen to hear about Freedom Rides organizer Rodney Powell’s epic takedown of Rev. Rick Warren, Ernestine Eckstein’s directions for the homophile movement, and Lorraine Hansberry’s thoughts on Eartha Kitt’s legs. Our wonderful guest host for this episode, Aubree Calvin, can be found at www.aubreecalvin.com or on her podcast Southern Queeries. You can also hear Aubree in our episode on Sister Rosetta Tharpe!
