An academic and cultural preservationist starts a nonprofit to ensure that the rich and unique musical history of Detroit, Michigan is available for future generations.

Welcome to this week’s episode of the YB2C Live! Podcast for Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners. Every week we discuss the entrepreneurial journey, including interviews with business owners of all sizes from Detroit and all over the world who share their stories to give you inspiration, motivation, and tips for overcoming challenges and achieving success for your business.

This week, for Episode #56, we welcome Dr. Carleton Gholz, an academician, a cultural preservationist, a researcher, and a lover of music history from Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Gholz is the founder and executive director of the Detroit Sound Conservancy.

Carleton was born and raised outside of Detroit, and during his formative years, he, like many of his contemporaries in the suburbs, was advised not to come anywhere near the seemingly dying and dangerous city.

After a stint at teaching at the university level, Dr. Gholz decided to come home to Detroit and pursue his real passion, musical and cultural preservation. Detroit has a very rich musical heritage, including the times before and after the famous Motown era. Of course, starting, growing, and maintaining a nonprofit includes its own set of challenges, but Carleton, as he prefers to be called, is ready, willing, and able to find, tell, and preserve the history of the music industry in Detroit.
