About Our Guest
Godwin, the son of Nigerian immigrants, grew up in northwest Detroit and went to Wayne State University on a football scholarship. While at Wayne State, he got his first job working in the cafeteria, received several promotions, and finally ended up working the grill in the kitchen. That is when he discovered that he really liked cooking and working in kitchens.
When he decided to go into the food business, he went back to his roots and focused on Afro-Caribbean cuisine, a specialty that he says is not taught in traditional culinary schools. The name of his restaurant is drawn from the African cultural concept that we are all part of a collective village.
Godwin and his team started with popups, and then added catering, and finally jumped on the opportunity to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant in a resurgent neighborhood in the City of Detroit.

What Our Guest Talked About
Both of Godwin’s parents were entrepreneurs, although his father was also a software engineer with the State of Michigan. Godwin, who just turned 35 years old, says that he has had about 35 different jobs in his life, and he has learned something from each job that he now applies to his business.
Godwin strongly believes in the concept of “Cooperative Economics” (“Ujamaa” in Swahili), where businesses can share commercial space, share mutually beneficial opportunities, and grow and develop their businesses together. He wants his business to be a beacon and an example for others in the City.
