An author. An editor. A Ghostwriter. A Master Wordsmith. Our guest this week looked at all of his skills and experience and opened his own freelance editing business four years ago.
Welcome to Episode #58 of the YB2C Live! Podcast for Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners. Every week we discuss the entrepreneurial journey, including interviews with business owners of all sizes from Detroit and all over the world who share their stories to give you inspiration, motivation, and tips for overcoming challenges and achieving success for your business.
Our guest this week is James Ranson. Author, editor, book coach, and ghostwriter, James has always had a love for words. He has always known that he wanted to work with words in some way and has managed to niche down his audience and clients through the years.
As an editor, James’ focus is on helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses with high-quality books by improving content, language, approach, and presentation in the text.
James describes his most recent book, what he calls his “second first book.” The book is appropriately titled “Don’t Write a Crappy Book,” which highlights all of the mistakes that entrepreneurs and writers make when writing books. These mistakes include not knowing one’s audience, wanting to get finished too quickly, or not hiring professional help. James’ book will be self-published and comes out October 1st.
Pam and James discuss their experiences early on in their editing businesses, and the complications that occur when one tries to handle everything themselves without hiring professionals to help. Just because someone is “self” publishing, does not mean they have to do everything themselves!
Financial struggles, unreliable authors, and misinformation can often cause problems between editors and authors. Many people don’t acknowledge the difference between editing and proofreading.
James gives quick tips to our listeners and his book recommendations to those who are searching for advice on changing paths and/or careers. You can find out more about James on his website.
