WOW - EP217 - The Hard Cam
Work Of Wrestling host Tim Kail examines the role of camerawork in professional wrestling - practically and philosophically - drawing insight from film and stage performance. Topics include: * A recap of a point Tim made about camerawork during the premiere of AEW Dynamite back in October '19 and a listener's response. * The influence of a "Work the hard cam" ethic on professional wrestling performance. * The function Hard Cam serves in comparison to a "Master Shot" in film & Television. * A pro-wrestling being a polymath who's been required to develop dual skills of "playing to the crowd" and "playing to the camera" simultaneous. * Tim's fundamental belief that "playing to hard cam" is not a skill a wrestler should have to develop or, more specifically, that it should be a much lower priority. * Figuring out camera positioning and a directing/editing style that allows pro-wrestlers to not have to self-consciously "hit their mark" when they should really be focused on the life & death scenarios playing out in the ring. * The actual constructive criticism Tim has for WWE's visual rhythm, which has less to do with camera position and more to do with editing & direction. WOW - EP184 - AEW All Out Review
Work Of Wrestling host Tim Kail reviews AEW's All Out, the blossoming wrestling promotion's final pay-per-view before the premiere of their weekly show on TNT. Horses and dogs and librarians, oh my! Tim covers all of All Out's five hours, which is the first constructive criticism he offers. From there, he talks #WomensWrestling in AEW and why it should be miles ahead of where it is, indy-wrestling's tendancy for its reach to exceed its grasp (sometimes literally), why A Boy and His Dinosaur has quickly become one of the best parts of the promotion, how commentary negatively affected PAC vs Omega (and the entire show for that matter), the incredibly fun Cracker Barrel match, the sincerity and humor of The Best Friends, why the overplayed David vs Goliath story reduces Tim's excitement for the women's title story, using sentient beings as entrance props, the gloriousness of Lucha Brothers vs. The Young Bucks and why AEW will be the definitive destination for tag team wrestling, and wh…

WOW - EP179 - NXT Take Over Toronto Review
It's Summer Slam weekend! But before we get to Summer Slam, let's talk NXT Take Over Toronto! Tim goes into detail about every match and segment, starting with a quick explanation of why the opening vignette for this Take Over was a cut above the rest. Then he talks Street Profits vs Undisputed Era, why the Profits (unlike most NXT Talent) actually have a shot of "getting over" on the main roster. Then it's time to breakdown that breakneck-pace of the excellent Candice LaRae vs Io Sharai - a hard-hitting, nonstop bout that shows the NXT Women's Division is in safe-keeping. Then The Ultimate Bro crashes the party with a flurry of knees, fists, and finishers to Killian Dane and a collection of security guards. In the penultimate match for the NXT Women's Championship, things don't quite click. Why is that? Tim endeavors to find an answer, while still praising the finish of the match. And, last but certainly not least, Tim goes over a remarkable main event in Johnny Gargano vs Adam…

WOW - EP177 - Art Finds A Way
Tim Kail returns to cover a number of topics, starting with current pro-wrestling news and then moving into more conceptual & philosophical ideas about art. He shares his thoughts on Colt Cabana ending Art Of Wrestling and his invaluable contributions to pro-wrestling and podcasting, why Twitter can be so harmful and why the user must take responsibility for how they engage with others, whether or not CM Punk should return, Heyman & Bischoff taking over Raw & Smackdown and whether or not Summer Slam needs a bigger main event than Rollins vs Lesnar, and Jon Moxley's brilliant performances in New Japan Pro-Wrestling's epic G1 Climax. Then Tim shifts to AEW's corporate-family approach to narrative structure (that is not too dissimilar from another promotion that needn't be named), and he ends with an explanation of why pro-wrestling is bigger and better than any one promotion - what that means with regard to art, and why it gives him solace. Why is The Rock such a great example of "getting lost in your character"? Why should you not make hyper specific references to millennials in your promo? What is the difference between "performing" and "being". Why do both Al & Tim struggle to connect with AJ Styles? WOW - EP154 - WrestleMania 34 Review
Tim Kail and Al Monelli return to review WWE's annual extravaganza, WrestleMania! Tim & Al dissect each match (with one exception), bouncing around the card as the conversation flows naturally, ultimately regarding the event as a mixed-bag with the first half being great and the second half being...well...not so great. Tim delivers an impassioned diatribe about the nuances of Game of Thrones references and how they don't fit Seth Rollins at all. Al breaks down why Asuka vs Charlotte was the best match of the night. Tim laughs to the point of crying at one point (keep your ear out for Al's description of Kurt Angles knees). Al & Tim also cover the Shinsuke Nakamura vs AJ Styles match, which turned out to be, literally, a dream match... And they consider whether or not, despite the fact that they like Roman Reigns, it's time for some meaningful changes to his character so that "The Roman Situation" doesn't continue to hang over WrestleMania proceedings in such a negative way. Have you ever questioned why you devote so much time to professional wrestling if it so often leaves you dissatisfied? That is the theme of this week's Work of Wrestling podcast as frequent guest and lifelong pro-wrestling fan, Al Monelli, joins host Tim Kail to explain why his interest in the WWE is steadily dwindling. Al contrasts his experience of watching the consistently excellent AMC drama Mad Men with his experience of watching the schizophrenic Monday Night Raw, and how these disparate experiences have lead to a significant realization. With age comes an increased awareness of the preciousness of time. So, when RAW inspires dejection and apathy in a viewer, does that viewer continue to watch simply because it's what they've always done or does the viewer search for a better use of their time? Join Al & Tim as they explore these questions and much more on The Work of Wrestling podcast. Follow Tim Kail on Twitter @MaximusWrestler and Al @MonelliFilms, and go to www.workofwrestlin…

WOW - EP12 - A High School Play Called WrestleMania
This week on The Work of Wrestling podcast host Tim Kail is joined by his friend and fellow pro-wrestling fan Al Monelli to discuss the state of the WWE - what the company is doing right, what the company is doing wrong, and how the company might evolve. Hilariaty, coarse language, and philosophizing ensues. The typical 3-part format of the show is absorbed by the conversation, Tim & Al fluctuating between personal stories, thoughts on society & modern culture (with particular attention paid to Facebook & Twitter), and how the WWE is scrambling and fumbling towards The WrestleMania finish-line. Al & Tim offer honest, constructive criticism on how the WWE can get better, and share where they already see signs for positive change in the company. This is a frank discussion between two old friends who are passaionate about pro-wrestling, who are knowledgeable about pro-wrestling, and who very much want what's actually "best for business" for the WWE.
