A's Disappointed in Oakland Offer, Keep Southern Nevada In Mind
This week the Oakland City Council approved a plan to build a new stadium and keep the A’s from moving out of town.The next day A’s executives responded by making their fourth trip to Las Vegas to gauge interest in relocating the Major League Baseball team to Southern Nevada.The plan endorsed by Oakland City Council included greater financial burdens on the team than what the A’s had proposed, including a less-favorable tax structure and a bigger investment in affordable housing.

Icing On The Cupcake: Abandoned Pig Improving, Awaits Adoption
An extremely obese potbellied pig dubbed Cupcake has been recovering since it was found abandoned in a dog crate left outside a Las Vegas home last month.The female pig was taken to the Animal Foundation, where its health has been improving with veterinary care and a balanced diet.Cupcake is losing weight but still has challenges getting around, said Tasha Crabtree, the foundation’s veterinary services manager. She said Cupcake might also face behavioral and socialization issues, which frequently arise in obese pigs.

Flood Season Storms Into Valley
Floods are bad enough, but adding the adjective “flash” makes them deadlier in Southern Nevada.The summer monsoons can generate cloudbursts that spawn floods as water roars through washes, diversion channels, and streets. People and vehicles can be swept away by the floods, which kill more people in Clark County than any other natural disaster, causing at least 35 deaths since 1960.

Nevada Battles COVID Resurgence
The resurgence of COVID-19 in Nevada has led to more deaths, renewed requests for masks, and warnings for others to stay away.The number of cases has steadily increased since late May, with Nevada’s test positivity rate hitting at 12 percent on Monday, up from 11.3 percent on Friday. In Southern Nevada, the Clark County rate was 13.5 percent.

Ownership Shuffles On Strip Called Part Of Gaming Industry Evolution
Casinos were quiet on the Strip during the pandemic but boardrooms were busy.Well-known resorts like the Venetian, Palazzo, and Palms have new owners. Eldorado Resorts took over Caesars Entertainment, keeping the better-known name. And an alphabet soup of investment vehicles like SPACs (special-purpose acquisition companies) and REITs (real estate investment trusts) have been put to use to extract more value out of Strip resorts and the real estate they sit on.

Downtown Arts Venue Announced; Smith Center Stages A Revival
What a difference a year makes.The downtown Las Vegas performing arts scene was boarded up in 2020 because of the pandemic. This summer, within a few days of each other, the development of a new downtown performing arts venue was revealed, and the Smith Center announced plays and concerts would be returning to its Symphony Park stages this fall.

The nation’s racial reckoning has brought raised voices and emotional appeals to recent meetings of Clark County School District trustees.The Clark County School District is in the midst of developing an anti-racism policy for one of the most diverse school systems in the country. Also, the debate over critical race theory has brought fiery rhetoric to the public comments at trustee meetings.
