269 - Conservative & Liberating View of Women in the Bible (w/ Marlo Schlalesky)
Jared Svendsen, executive producer of the show and older brother of the host, stops by to discuss his recent conversion to Eastern Orthodoxy and why despite Joey’s liberal theology, he still sees his brother as a fellow Christian.  Joey also shares a story on how Jared prayed over his little brother "in tongues" when they were teens.   Marlo Schalesky wrote Women of the Bible Speak Out, which is a study of twenty women in Scripture and how God responded to them walking through betrayal, abuse, endangerment, blame, and shame.  Despite their circumstances and labels, this book highlights God’s healing and transforming power, calling these women to wholeness, new vision, and holiness.  In light of her work in this book, we discuss whether the Bible was written for men and what the implications of that would be.  Marlo also does NOT lean into more progressive interpretations of the Bible that would typically make the treatment of women in the Bible more palatable.   Marlo:  Get “Women of the Bible Speak Out” anywhere you buy books! Acceptance: Major Label Guinea Pigs
Acceptance is a Tooth & Nail artist a couple of decades in the making. They just made and released their first album on Tooth & Nail called Wild, Free this year. But it was right here in the Seattle Tacoma area where Acceptance was founded in 2003, right at the time that Tooth & Nail was transitioning to the new sound with the explosion of the 2nd generation. Acceptance, who were first generation Tooth & Nail kids, teamed up with Aaron Sprinkle, and instead of taking the indie path, they were one of the first bands to be scooped up by a major label right off the bat and in a lot of ways were the major’s guinea pigs. they created a landmark album called Phantoms that became a legend of the scene, but the band never truly found a groove before disbanding in 2006. Their music, however, would continue to rise in popularity thereafter, and is still known as a flagship Seattle band. #540 Walt Shelton: Is Having a Routine and Practice-Oriented Approach Essential for Meaningful Living?
Walt Shelton and his new book, The Daily Practice of Life, really made an impression on us. Having a practice-oriented approach is essential for meaningful living, but is that realistic? Walt draws from Christianity and what Jesus's practice may have looked like, but also incorporates deep wisdom from other traditions that turn out to be quite compatible with Jesus's approach to life. This perspective is a very good fit for a deconstructed Christian looking forward. In contrast to building walls with gates opening only to creeds matching one’s own, this book helps readers: - create a personal routine integrating faith and practical realities - draw on past ups and downs to improve focus on now and offer hope for a brighter future - turn life experiences into parables with wisdom for more informed choices - open up and respectfully listen and learn within and outside our own tradition - amplify commonalities that implement the heart of all authentic religions Links & Sponsors: Marriage Supply: use code BCPOD for 10% off Stamps: code BADCHRISTIAN Policy Genius: Tooth & Nail: "The Path" by Fit For A King Check out Emery's new album "White Line Fever" at Pre-Order "I'm Only A Man" Update on vinyl: Join Emeryland: Are You Listening: A Streamo Show:
