How To Know Which Supplements To Take When You Are TTC
Justine Altman joins us today as we’re digging into the basic supplements you need to know about if you are TTC. There is a lot of information about which supplements are right for fertility. And like most women that I speak with you are probably taking A LOT of supplements. But are these supplements optimizing or harming your fertility? And taking supplements for years and not really knowing WHY or if they are helpful...doesn’t make sense either! As you may know, we take a functional approach to fertility and while supplements are included in our customized protocols (which are based on testing) - they are only a part of the equation. Because there is no magic pill you can take that will out supplement the basics - such as diet, sleep, movement, and stress. That’s why we wanted to talk about the BASIC supplements that we DO recommend for both men and women so that you don't waste time and money taking the wrong ones. Today I'm welcoming Justine Altman back to the podcast. Justine is part of my team here at Fab Fertile. She is an integral part of our Couples Coaching program - which uses functional lab testing, diet, and lifestyle changes to dramatically improve conception. If you are struggling with infertility...your body is desperately trying to tell you something...focusing on your health will either help you get pregnant naturally or if you do need to go to the fertility clinic it will improve your chances of success. Justine is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. She was diagnosed with POCS and struggled with infertility but after taking a functional approach was able to have both her children naturally. In this episode you'll learn: 1) How to watch out for dyes, fillers, and top allergens in your supplements 2) Our take on generalized fertility supplement recommendations (are they worth your money?) i.e. chastetree, maca, royal jelly, bee pollen, zinc, iron 3) Our basic (these are the supplements you need to be taking if you are TTC) supplement recommendations (your partner is included too!) 4) Our approach with supplements and why they are only part of the equation. We discuss the importance of diet, sleep, exercise, and stress so that you can prepare your body in the best way for pregnancy success. TIMESTAMPS: 05:29- JUSTINE'S BIO 06:19- WHY WE ARE ADDRESSING SUPPLEMENTS * Why taking heaps of supplements can be problematic * Why we are addressing supplements for both men and woman * "You cannot out supplement the basics." 08:58- WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SUPPLEMENT INDUSTRY * The importance of good quality supplements * The harm low-quality supplements can have * Should you buy supplements from Amazon? 12:23- GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS- SHOULD WE LISTEN? * Supplements that might be helpful, but aren't always for everyone 14:10- BASIC SUPPLEMENTS- PRENATAL * What you MUST have in your prenatal 16:34- MEN'S MULTIVITAMIN 17:32- COQ10 18:26- MAGNESIUM 19:52- OMEGA 3'S * OMEGA 3's vs. OMEGA 6's * Anti-inflammatory properties 21:03- VITAMIN D3 & K2 * Why is it important? Why do we take K2 with it? 23:38- PROBIOTICS 26:00- USING PROBIOTICS WHILE TRYING TO REDUCE INFECTIONS 27:00- RECAP OF SUPPLEMENT BASICS * How long should we be taking them? * Which ones we should temporarily take vs. take long-term. 29:27- FINAL THOUGHTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS "Most of the supplements are not forever." "One size does not fit all." "We cannot out supplement any bad diet or lifestyle behaviors." --- Sponsored by Fab Fertile Store. Diet Culture and the Patriarchy
Have you ever stopped to consider that dieting and the diet industry work to keep us busy and distracted as a result of the patriarchy? The constant pursuit of body perfection tries to keep us spinning on a hamster wheel so that we do not have the time or energy for anything else, and that needs to stop now. Key Takeaways If You Want To Start Uncovering How Dieting and the Patriarchy You Can: * Stop equating healthiness to weight * Accept that you have a skewed perception of your body * Challenge yourself to think about how you perpetuate diet culture in the patriarchy * Take steps to actively put your time and energy into something different than body perfection The System Was Built To Make Us Fail When we are preoccupied with the scale and food restrictions, we shrink ourselves literally and metaphorically. The ideal body comes from decades of the patriarchy that is reinforced by everything around you. The system is designed to oppress women-identifying folks, while the ideal body keeps changing. The time, resources, and attention that pursuit of body perfection takes is just simply not worth it. It is about damn time that we get off this hamster wheel and focus on something other than our bodies. Reinvesting Your Energy How often do you compliment someone on their looks as the first thing you say about them? Can you imagine how much time and energy you could get back if you started questioning the influence of the patriarchy on our endless pursuit for body perfection? Instead of focusing on what could go wrong or what you could miss out on if you start feeding into this internalized intersection of diet and the patriarchy, think about all the things you could gain if you stopped focusing on controlling the way you look. I truly believe that we were not put on this planet to work ourselves to achieve the perfect body. Your energy, your spirit, and your magic could all be being wasted on the patriarchal view of body perfection, and you are worth so much more than that. How are you working to stop internalizing and perpetuating the intersection of diet culture and the patriarchy? Let me know how your challenge went this week in the comments section of the episode page. In This Episode * Examples of ways that diet culture keeps us distracted from the world around us (6:10) * The role of the patriarchy and how it is woven into oppressive systems (11:50) * Why we need to tease apart health and weight and accept body diversity (17:42) * The problem with BMI and how it plays into body dysmorphia (20:00) * A special challenge for you to take away from this episode (23:23) Quotes “Dieting for the sake of body perfection keeps us distracted from everything else going on in the world because it is all-consuming.” (6:15) “We have this constantly being reinforced to us from a very young age that if we look the part if we look a certain way like these body ideals and beauty ideals, that we will be more worthy, that we will be better people. And it is absolutely a tool of the patriarchy.” (11:58) “Because of body diversity, some people in larger bodies are in great health, just like some people in smaller bodies are in terrible health.” (19:06) “We live in a patriarchal society, we live in a fatphobic society, we live in a white supremacist society, where all of these things are consistently reinforced. So it is not our fault.” (22:42) “How can you take your idea of worth, your own worth or what you appreciate about someone else, and expand that? What energy would that buy you back?” (27:14) Featured on the Show If you're ready to get free with food and fitness, check out the Tune In Membership Mindful Eating Tool More Than A Body by Lindsay Kite & Lexi Kite Body Image With Bri Instagram Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Overcoming Emotional Eating with Tricia Nelson
*Show Summary:* *"To heal your hunger, you have to feel some hunger because that hunger informs you of what's going on."* Do you feel defeated because of your Yoyo diet? Do you feel frustrated from preventing yourself from binge eating unhealthy foods, but you still end up feeling guilty after a stressful day? Have you always been disappointed because of overeating? Tricia Nelson, the author of Heal Your Hunger book and a transformational speaker, shares her roller coaster experience in being an emotional eater. She tried many ways like diet, pills, programs, and consulted an eating disorder therapist to find solutions, but unfortunately, nothing worked for her.  She would always go back to her yoyo diet, which broke her hope of finding the real problem. Being focused on food and weight symptoms is not the key because it is just a symptom.  What you have to dive into and deal with are the underlying causes, like the emotional factors. Good thing, Tricia overcame this through the help of her spiritual healer by addressing the real cause of her eating disorder. Her journey has been her inspiration in educating people about food addiction or any health issues where the diet is involved. Listen as she breaks down the common misconceptions about food, emotional, and physical hunger. *Important Links* Gutsy Health Website Provo Health Instagram Heal Your Hunger Website Heal Your Hunger Book  Heal Your Hunger Instagram *Exceptional Highlight:* * “Whatever the health problem, diet plays a major part of getting the problem and then healing the problem.” *  We use food as a form of escape because of worry and stress and fear, we want to numb out. * Feed your body and get used to a regular schedule of eating, so that you have space between the meals.. *Show Highlights: * *What is Tricia’s story?* *Tricia 2:21* * I started out as an emotional eater, I think from the get go like as far back as I can, I remember food was a big highlight for me. *How did she figure out the missing piece to her problem?* *Tricia 5:1* * I was still young. I tried so many things, I'd actually lost some weight. And I was about to go back up the scale again, because that was my habit.  *How did she start to heal her hunger?* *Tricia  24:55* * I did a lot of intense work. After a year or so I was in so much of a better place, and I didn't have the cravings anymore. I was in a thin body and I could handle being in a thin body, feeling worthy of being seen or feeling comfortable. *How does one differentiate between emotional hunger and physical hunger* *Tricia  37:4* * I've been doing this work for over 30 years now and it amazes me as a motivator, like I'll get off a phone call that's really stressful and I’d be like, “I'm hungry”. * And I'll think, “What can I eat?” And then I'll have this conversation with myself. And I'd be like, “Wait, you know, you just had breakfast a couple hours ago. Are you really that hungry?” Support the show (https://www.mygutsyhealth.com/gutsy-family)

Change Your Mindset About Diets(if you want lasting weight loss)
There seems to be an unlimited stream of diets these days How did eating so complicated? People keep paying out lots of money for new fad diets when they're merely the same old thing repackaged with impressive marketing strategies. A Google search on the word “diet,” will bring you a huge amount of search results. It's so great that the internet is loaded with information. What's not so great is that it’s also filled with huge amounts of data that portray dieting as the panacea for weight loss. The word diet has come to mean a method of restrictive eating habits aimed at losing or gaining weight. With an emphasis on "restrictive." There are many different restrictive “diets” with thousands and thousands, of voices barking at us every day why their particular version of restrictive diet is the greatest one to follow. We want to lose weight, so we get on board.  But… Is it possible this diet mentality is completely wrong? These types of diets just don’t work. You might lose those extra pounds at first, but eventually, they’ll return. Fad diets fail in the long term.  What's a diet, really?  A “Diet” is the entire pattern of your eating habits. Our physical health is closely linked to our food choices. Those food choices and our physical health are cumulative. Your diet is the sum of your eating patterns. “When we reject diets and diet culture, we learn that our bodies have amazing internal wisdom. They can tell us how much to eat, when to stop, and what foods make us feel most energized.” ~Christine Byrne --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/weightloss-mindset/message

250: How to Heal from SIBO Without SIBO Taking Over Your Life w/ Phoebe Lapine
If You Want To Heal Your SIBO You Should: * Address the three main risk factor buckets and identify the root cause of your bacteria overgrowth * Find a bodyworker to help you navigate which protocol will work best for you * Embrace a beautifully diverse diet by focusing on an anti-inflammatory protocol SIBO, or Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, affects millions of people but can be difficult to nail down. Unlike other gut imbalances, SIBO happens when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the upper part of your digestive tract. Because of the importance of the location of this bacteria, it takes the right support to heal your gut and reduce your inflammation. Healing SIBO Through Food with Phoebe Lapine Phoebe Lapine believes that food can and should be medicine. A writer, gluten-free chef, culinary instructor, Hashimoto’s advocate and so much more, Phoebe is here to share her story of autoimmune disease and healing SIBO from the inside out. What You Need To Know About SIBO Due to stress, lifestyle factors, and hormones, women suffer from SIBO far more often than men. It is important to understand the connections between all of these factors so that you can uncomplicate your symptoms and work on finding the healing protocol that is right for you. Everything from structural issues in your gut to your body's ability to kill bacteria can have an impact on your likelihood of developing SIBO. Gas, bloating, thyroid hormones, and so much more can play a role here, which is why it is essential to equip yourself with the necessary knowledge to address your gut dysbiosis in the best way possible. Finding the Right Treatment for Your Body Addressing bacteria overgrowth takes an individualized approach to be the most effective possible. Antibiotics, herbs, and different diets can all be helpful depending on your unique sensitivity, lifestyle, and detox methods. It is important to know what you are working with before you start to treat your symptoms. Phoebe suggests starting from a place of anti-inflammatory protocols. You don't have to stop enjoying food to cure your gut bacteria; all it takes is the knowledge to guide yourself through gut complications and get to a place of a beautifully diverse diet. Phoebe is a real example of the amazing possibilities of healing SIBO and clearing up what is going on in the body through food, lifestyle, and body kindness. Do you or someone you love suffer from SIBO? Share which of Phoebe’s tips you are going to incorporate into your daily routine with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “Sometimes you just need help getting onto a higher plateau of healing.” (18:56) “At the end of the day, this is all just connected tissue, and fascia and soft tissue muscles, and we have to make sure those are working, which is a whole different ballgame from the bacteria situation.” (24:58) - Dr. Mariza “SIBO to me explains why a low fodmap diet is effective in terms of symptoms, because if you have perfectly normal bacteria in the wrong place too far up your digestive tract, and you feed them the foods they enjoy most, then, of course, you are going to have some sort of gas as part of that, having it be too far up your intestinal tract as well.” (33:18) “It's never just SIBO, there is usually kind of a bigger issue at play, even if it is not necessarily causing the issue in of itself.” (33:33) “Diversity is the spice of life, and we don't want to be overloading our system with large quantities of one ingredient.” (38:31) In This Episode * Why women are more susceptible to SIBO than men (12:21) * The three different buckets that can impact your gut and hormone symbiosis (19:38) * Where to start when testing for SIBO and other digestive issues (25:42) * Which foods you should be focusing on to fix your SIBO and inflammation (31:34) * How to embrace the diversity of life with anti-inflammatory versions of comfort food (38:25) Resources Mentioned: Order the SIBO Made Simple Book Here SIBO Made Simple Website SIBO Made Simple Podcast Feed Me Phoebe Website The Wellness Project Website Follow Phoebe on Instagram Dr. Allison Siebecker Website Related Episodes: Essentially You Episode #230: Dismantling Myths About Leaky Gut, Gut Health and Probiotics with Tina Anderson Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

EP49 | SIBO Relapse, Retreatment & Prevention + New Therapy Ideas That Give Us Hope with Dr. Allison Siebecker
We are ending the podcast where we began: with the incredible Dr. Allison Siebecker. In this wind-down episode, I wanted to cover some frequently asked questions around relapse, retreatment and prevention. So many people end up in cycles of SIBO that they feel they will never exit from. But there is so much to be hopefully about, even for chronic SIBO cases, and this conversation really shows why. Not only does Dr. Siebecker help troubleshoot some scenarios of stubborn SIBO, she gives an overview of an entire new toolkit of therapies that have shown incredible clinical results. None of these ideas involve aggressive herbals or antibiotics—in fact, very few require any pills at all. Even if you feel you know everything there is to know about SIBO, I assure you this episode will open your mind to a whole new world of healing. We are also brought to you by Epicured, a low FODMAP meal delivery service that understands that food is medicine. Each menu is created by Michelin star chefs and honed by doctors and dieticians at mount sinaii to restore digestive health for those with IBS, SIBO, Celiac and IBD. Everything they serve is 100 percent low FODMAP and gluten-free, with no cooking required! My favorite part about their dishes is the healthy spin on takeout gems like shrimp laksa and PAD THAI! Their version had a great balance of fresh veggies mixed in with the noodles that left me feeling both satisfied and completely free of my usual carb coma.
