FF 251 - Voices from Death Row with Lyle May
42 min

On today’s episode of Felony Friday we have our second interview with an inmate on death row with Lyle May joining the show. Be sure to go back and listen to our interview from two weeks ago with death row inmate George T. Wilkerson.

Prior to Lyle calling into the show , John is joined again by co-author on the Crimson Letters: Voices from Death Row, Tessie Castillo. The book was the brain child of Tessie and she shares why people need to read it and some of the challenges she had to overcome to make this book reality.

For the second part of the show, Lyle May calls in and provides a fascinating and engaging interview. He addresses topics that span from how he stays motivated on death row to his criminal justice reform proposals. Lyle was convicted of a double homicide in 1999 at age 19. While incarcerated he has managed to earn a GED and Associate's Degree. He has also published two books and is working on his third. Lyle has written for The Marshall Project, The J Journal, Prison Writers, and maintains a blog at Beyond Steel Doors.

11/27/20 Stephen Zunes on Joe Biden’s Foreign Policy
Scott talks to Stephen Zunes about Joe Biden’s track record on foreign policy, and its potential implications for his presidency. Zunes rehashes some of the bad parts of Biden’s record, beginning with his support for the invasion of Iraq. Although many Democrats voted for the war, Biden specifically and energetically advocated for it. Zunes worries that Biden is a true believer in the American empire, whereas President Trump doesn’t really have firm beliefs about anything. This made Trump unpredictable, but also probably less dangerous on the issue of foreign wars. Zunes speculates that Biden’s cabinet picks will be bad; all the same establishment figures that have been running America into the ground for at least 25 years. Discussed on the show: “The Other Reason Biden Shouldn’t Run” (Progressive.org) The Burn Pits: The Poisoning of America’s Soldiers Stephen Zunes is a professor of politics and international studies at the University of San Francisco. He is the author of Western Sahara: War, Nationalism, and Conflict Irresolution and Civil Resistance Against Coups: A Comparative and Historical Perspective.
