Episode 17: Live from the Annual Captains' Meeting
Play • 18 min

In this episode of Inside Trader Joe’s, we come to you live (well, we recorded it live) from the Trader Joe’s Annual Captains' Meeting. Every year, we gather every Captain (Manager) from every Trader Joe’s across the country together, in one place, to let them know where we’re going, say thanks for all the great things that have happened over the last year, and to give them some useful information to bring back to their stores. We’ll hear about some delicious new products (even for pets!) coming soon to a Trader Joe’s near you, and we’ll have a little fun with our Captains along the way.

Ep. 192: The Demystification Of Staffing (& Meet Kimberly!)
Liz and Sarah have just staffed their new show, the remake of the iconic series, Fantasy Island! They talk through the staffing process — from reading scripts to writer meetings to creating group chemistry. Their main message: If you don’t get the job, it’s not personal. In From The Outer Office, Liz and Sarah introduce their new assistant, Kimberly Chiang, who talks about what it’s like to work with people she’s never met in person. The short answer? It’s weird. This week’s Hollywood Hack has changed Liz and Sarah’s work life: the Nulaxy Laptop Stand. Kristen Miglore makes Caramelized Cream Carrots
On _Play Me a Recipe, _your favorite cooks will walk you through their most treasured recipes, offering all the insider tips, stories, and tricks you won't get from a written recipe—and you'll be right alongside them, every step of the way. Feel free to pause, jump back, or navigate the steps via the podcast chapters. If you're cooking along, here's the recipe we're making today. Go ahead and grab the ingredients below (Kristen starts listing them at 1:58) before starting the episode. Caramelized Cream Carrots * Carrots (as many as you want to eat; Kristen uses 2 large) * Heavy cream (enough to coat the bottom of your pan; Kristen used about 1 cup) * Salt (to taste) "The question today was what if we cooked carrots in a touch of cream? They should first steam and then caramelize in the cream as it transfoms into brown butter. We would eliminate a par cooking step and keep all the flavor in the vegetable. It turns out that the idea works like a charm. I put the carrots, cream and salt into a pan. I covered the pan and cooked the carrots on medium high. When I heard sizzling I removed the lid and stirred the carrots in the reduced and almost broken cream. I continued to cook the carrots turning them in the fat and coating them in the caramelizing milk solids. The cream became a flavorful browned butter. The carrots are tender with a light bite. The caramelized milk solids add a richness. The next questions we ask: what can be the carrots and what flavors can we add to our cream?" _Excerpted from Alex Talbot and Aki Kamozawa's __Ideas in Food_.

110: Six Minute Sex Ed w/ Kim Cavill
Talking openly about sex is very new to me. I openly share about religion and parenting but have little experience sharing about my sex life. It feels very private so it’s hard to be vulnerable in that way. A lot of parents experience this same issue in trying to raise their own kids with healthy sexuality. This week’s guest, Kim Cavill, struggled through the lack of sex education as a child and is now passionate about keeping other kids from going through what she did. Kim started teaching sexual education for people with disabilities and those who worked with them in Australia. She now hosts the podcast Six Minute Sex Ed. On her podcast, she gives children the information and tools they need to not be as vulnerable to sexual trauma and abuse. Tune in to hear Kim and I discuss sex ed and how to discuss sexuality honestly. Show Highlights: * Kim’s story and her experience with religious trauma. * How to balance the privacy of our sex lives with the need to make those conversations open and public. * Why there is such a lack of sex ed in the home. * Research from the Kinsey Institute on our sexual identifications and behavior. * Why parents need to think of themselves more as a mentor to their kids than a teacher. * How to work through our own triggers when we talk to our kids about sex. * How to talk about sex-positivity in a sex-negative culture. * Why education isn’t a switch you can turn off and on. * How to stop carrying others’ trauma. * What our kids really want to hear from us about sex.
