Mind Over Matter: Mental Health In The Media
Previously on Geeks Represent, we’ve talked about the importance of health especially when it comes to people of color. However, one of the most neglected aspects of health is that of the mind. If the last few years have shown us anything, it’s that our mental health cannot be taken for granted, and that people of color have been particularly vulnerable due to both systemic racism and culture norms. For many, it was considered diverse if you had one black guy in the cast if there was one at all. The Last Racebender: The Legend of Whitewashing
As geeks, we enjoy all kinds of entertainment. But at Geeks Represent, we especially value stories told from the perspectives of people of all kinds of races and cultures. We feel it’s incredibly important to not only have these stories told with sincerity but to tell them well through accurate portrayals of people of color. For the last half century, anime has gone far beyond the borders of Japan to reach audiences all around the world. Like a Boss! DC Fandome's BAWSE Females of Color
Today we will be discussing one of the panels from the first DC Fandome event. Great content dropped that day including trailers and behind the scenes for Wonder Woman ‘84, The Batman and Suicide Squad, but one stood out: BAWSE Females of Color. As actresses of color from across the DC universe, these women discussed their personal experiences, the impact of their characters and what it means to be a boss.

We're Canceled (Already?)! A Look at Cancel Culture - GR#1
The world has gotten so much smaller thanks to high speed internet and social media. Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, said “Nothing travels faster than the speed of light, with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own laws.” Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Reddit have made it easier than ever to form communities, but they’ve also made it easier for society to collectively pass judgment and publicly shame someone for allegedly doing something wrong. A long time ago (in 2019), four not so young men of color congregated for the first time. Fun was had, and they parted with the promise that they would soon see one another again. But it was not to be, for a pandemic had swept the nation and they were forced to stay apart for the foreseeable future. These four men did not give up, and with the aid of modern technology and a sense of duty to the world, these four formed a plot to commune every week and discuss the things that matter to them: racial injustice, anime, representation in media, comic book shows and movies, cultural appropriation, sci fi and fantasy, the fight for equality, and so much more.
