Punks
Play • 23 min

Once upon a time, Kai Wright saw a movie called "Punks." A romantic comedy about black gay men, it was like nothing he'd ever seen before. But then it disappeared.

Kai Wright is editor and host of WNYC’s Narrative Unit and a columnist for The Nation magazine. Patrik-Ian Polk is the writer and director of Punks; he went on to create Noah's Arc, The Skinny, and Blackbird, and is now a producer and writer for Being Mary Jane. He is currently producing and writing the upcoming Starz drama series, Pussy Valley.

Special thanks to the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at USC.

Episode scoring by Jeremy Bloom with additional music by Ultracat ("Little Happenings"). Theme by Alex Overington.

SBG 60: Bridgerton with Krü Maekdo
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Krü Maekdo (@krumaekdo), founder of the Black Lesbian Archives, to talk about why Bridgerton Should’ve Been Gay. This show gives us all of the elements of what could be an epic lesbian storyline and then does not deliver on it. We all know Eloise is gay. They’re really not even trying to disguise it. Between her relationship with her “best friend” Penelope, her obsession with Lady Whistledown, and her general attitude of indifference towards men, it really couldn’t be any more apparent that Eloise is a whole baby gay. Look, she cuts her own bangs. Need we say more? We talk about “best friend” Penelope and how while she is a bit better at hiding it, she is also very much a lesbian. They even use the popular ‘brother as a stand-in love interest’ trope, but we know better. We also talk about Queen Charlotte and the convenient lack of a King; she’s totally hooking up with Lady Danbury and you can’t tell us otherwise. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. Leigh Holmes Foster (@lshfoster) and Ellie Brigida (@elliebrigida). 7: Most Annoying Phrases, Fled Cruz and Winter Storm Uri, Clubhouse
What's a phrase people say all the time that you hate? We "did a thing" and got feedback LIVE on air! And friend of the show Shane brings some Los Angeles sunshine to the panel this week! It's happening again: people continue to cause destruction by celebrating their unborn babies' genitals via explosion (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/22/nyregion/gender-reveal-explosion-ny.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&fbclid=IwAR3nWVRY6GwD8PNfC_OIEcIWfdK0wndKgydtFgkKiqq0-_RAsJAU-M0Tdo8) . Do we wish ill on anyone? No. Do we care that Rush Limbaugh died? Also no. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is under fire after the state Attorney General released a report indicating that Cuomo's office underreported the number of COVID-related nursing home deaths. Can we sympathize with his position? Winter Storm Uri has devastated much of the southern and middle United States. Particularly in Texas, where the power grid has been deregulated for two decades because dErEGuLaTiOn MeAnS fREedOm.  As if the human and infrastructure toll wasn't bad enough, consumers are now having to fight power bills for tens of thousands of dollars (https://www.forbes.com/sites/jonathanponciano/2021/02/20/17000-electric-bill-deregulated-power-grid-texas-griddy/?sh=3c725cc258ba) . Flyin' Cruz, Cancun Cruz, Fled Cruz: how many names can we come up with for a Senator for abandoning his state in the middle of a crisis? Meanwhile, AOC and Beto O'Rourke have picked up the slack for Ted to show Texans what real leadership looks like. Remember, Texas: y'all can vote this fucker out in 2024. Dolly Parton says "thanks, but no thanks" to a Tennessee state Capitol proposal for a statue of her likeness. Do we allow smartphone apps to track us? We don't think so... but maybe, kinda sorta. Can we just get a villain origin story that doesn't try to humanize the villain for once? Clubhouse: what we like, what we're confused about, and whether or not you're missing out by not having early access. We've got a little bit of everything in this week's recommendations: Follow @NASAPersevere for the adventures of a real-life Wall-E (Andrew), Gino's pizza in Atlanta (Laura), Silicone popcorn poppers (Pam), and 'The Warmth of Other Suns' by Isabel Wilkerson (Shane).   And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: What the hell did Armie Hammer do, and how does it relate to online dating? Will someone this rich and connected actually face consequences for his actions? We cover some of our Patrons' cringiest online dating stories, and they remind us of a few of our own.

Grilling w/ Julia Turshen - Ep. 173
Weber? I hardly know her! Yes, it's the first week in March, but it's never too soon to talk about grilling! Especially when home chef and author Julia Turshen is on hand to discuss tips, tricks, and best practices for this cooking method that isn't inherently queer but sure feels queer. Julia answered all our burning questions like, what are the best things to grill? Do you need 'dad' jokes in your back pocket to be a grill master? Charcoal or propane? And why can't cis men stop flipping and poking things? Before firing up the grill convo, we learn about the L Word-inspired recipe in her latest cookbook Simply Julia (out now) and her other approachable (and delicious) recipes. Plus, Melody asks Carolyn to clear up her past stance on Joss Whedon (boooo!), we tell you how much we care about I Care A Lot, and take a second to dunk on Oreo. Finally, we answer a question from an in-the-closet listener who is wondering about timing. FOLLOW US ON THE STEREO APP FREE FOR OUR 3X WEEKLY LIVESTREAM SHOW THE GAYEST THING. Episode 34: Queers in the Civil Rights Movement
For today’s episode, Leigh is joined by return guest host, Aubree Calvin, to commemorate Black History Month by telling the stories of some folks who made contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s whose queerness has been overlooked or erased, and the ways in which the tremendous work done by Black activists was absolutely essential to the evolution of LGBTQ rights actions. Listen to hear about Freedom Rides organizer Rodney Powell’s epic takedown of Rev. Rick Warren, Ernestine Eckstein’s directions for the homophile movement, and Lorraine Hansberry’s thoughts on Eartha Kitt’s legs. Introducing: The Real Question
We're reaching the end of Casper's tenure here on Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, but never fear! You can still get your Casper and Vanessa fix over on our new show, The Real Question. Our first episode is out today, and Casper and Vanessa discuss all things Tooth Fairy. After playing the Tooth Fairy for her two step-daughters, Vanessa is having doubts about the appropriateness of this supposedly silly childhood ritual. Drawing up a recent article about the Marquis de Sade and the song Super Trouper from Mamma Mia, Vanessa and Casper try to wade through the fears that a parent can have for their kids. -- The Real Question is a weekly podcast exploring life’s questions through a surprising mix of pop culture and academic insight. Vanessa Zoltan and Casper ter Kuile learned in divinity school about the art of paying attention. By paying attention to very specific things in our lives, we can begin to see something true about big, universal questions. In this podcast, they turn that attention to a variety of everyday scenarios in their own lives to see what’s really at stake. Questions about the tooth fairy can really be about the fear we have for our children. Questions about driving can really be about what it means to be a good partner. Each week, Vanessa and Casper walk each other through the process of figuring out what their ‘real’ questions are in conversations with texts ranging from movie musicals to theological treatises. In this intimate, thoughtful podcast we explore how friendship can be a tool for living a more intentional life.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
