His book goes a great job of looking at the struggles to create the different installments in the Ghostbusters franchise, including looking at the conflicts that happened behind the scenes. In addition to his scifi novel Cometary Tales, he’s release a historical fiction book titled Ford the Pacholet. Like a lot of us authors, Janene has had points in her life that simply didn't make writing a reasonable outlet. In this episode, she and I have a great talk about how to come to terms with having to choose between writing and dealing with life crises, as well as how to use spiritual tropes mindfully-- bearing in mind that talking about someone's faith in your writing will impact different readers in different ways, depending on their backgrounds.

Author of numerous books, Allison Church comes to Hungry Trilobyte as part of the #Fans4Healing project. In this episode, she and I will talk about how getting into Star Trek fandom helped her understand how to understand her value as a person, as well as how to adapt to her life as a transgender woman. When discussing Star Trek, she mentions how much she loves both Discovery and TOS, and I offer a fan project called Star Trek: Aurora that might offer her a different perspective on the series.
On the topic of her books, we have a great chat about Dark Passenger, a horror story set during the voyage of the Titanic. What I love about this novel is that it’s genre fiction, but has enough basis in fact to be plausible. Allison looks into the artifact rumors that have been documented, and I mention my love of the paranormal lore (including a One Step Beyond episode) that surrounds this ship.

Dominion: Fall of the House of Saul is a space epic retelling of the Biblical book 1 Samuel. The three of us spend a lot of time discussing the pros and cons of taking a fantastic approach to such an ancient scripture. Samson: Rise is a more text-faithful interpretation of the Bible story, but still using the format of the comic book for full dramatic effect.
In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, we have a lot of fun looking at how comic book fandom can be used to intersect with people’s faiths on a literal level, and why this project works while so many others don’t.

Michael Stein earned his indie film stripes starring as Dirk Diggler in the short film that would later be remade as Boogie Nights. Not only did he get a cameo in the later movie, but he quickly developed a relationship with movies and independent film, at a time when the indie film world was a completely different world.

HTP #083 - Kieren McCarthy
Kieren McCarthy is a journalist on staff at The Register, and was one of the few writers to voice concerns over Atari's latest console attempt. Kieren's skepticism escalated considerably when he met with the Atari team in person at GDC, and detailed his misgivings in the now-famous article 'We sent a vulture to find the relaunced Atari Box - and all he got was this lousy baseball cap'. Atari responded by claiming Kieren made up the story, despite there being a recording of the meeting.
In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Kieren and I discuss why critical thinking seems to be lacking when it comes to video-game-centric discussion, and areas where Atari could have actually released a better product, had they had a mind to.

In addition to being the Dean of Natural Sciences at Duke University, Dr. Mohamed Noor is also a giant Star Trek fan, and has the opportunity to act as a science advisor on Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. Not only was he on the team that developed the scientific rationale behind “The Burn”, he and Dr. Erin Macdonald (episodes #13 and #51) wrote a detailed article titled The Science Behind Discovery’s Burn that fleshes out the details for the science-minded viewers.
This episode of Hungry Trilobyte features he and I discussing how it’s now acceptable to use fandom in academia, whereas that was not always the case. We spend a lot more time just hashing out scientific weirdness (and accidental accuracies) within our favorite Star Trek episodes.

Her work has led her to teach a university class on the changing role of women in the James Bond universe.
