Play episode · 1 hr 34 min
We are back together this episode... well, sort of (thanks to physical distancing!). Money talks glimmers, and why we should be able to identify those as easily as we identify triggers. Nikeeta is still essential, but she was already that to us before coronavirus! She drops another hit jingle and tells us about a transformative book in her life. We celebrate AfroBrazilian vocalist Liniker Barros as QueerWOC of the week and discuss why we're over dating apps. Triggers have become part of our everyday vocabulary as trauma becomes more of a social norm to speak about, but the other side of that polyvagal theory hasnt gotten nearly enough shine - glimmers. Glimmers are essentially the opposite of triggers! If a trigger brings us into a survival state, and is also known as a cue of danger,, glimmers are what bring us back into our window of tolerance and safety Glimmers are any experience, person, place, or resource that creates the possibility of safe connection with ourselves, others, or the environment Here are some guiding questions to begin to identify Glimmers: What people, places, feelings, smells, sensations glimmer me back into feeling safe and connected? What brings up happy memories for me? Is there a smell, book, or activity that instantly reminds me of good days? What are my safety survival responses? Meaning when I have completely had it, what to i do/where do i go/who do i run to? What glimmers are most effective when I am in a survival state? Which glimmers bring me back to center from fight? Flight? Freeze? What do my different states feel like in my body? How do I know a glimmer is kicking in and I feel safe? What does a glimmer feel like, what sensations does it bring up, what feelings? Share your glimmers with us! Suzette Simon is the founder of NYLaughs (NYL), a 501(c)3 performing arts nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of New Yorkers through laughter and deepening an appreciation of stand up comedy as a unique NY cultural asset by producing free comedy programming in public spaces. For the past 13 years, NYL has offered live comedy performances to diverse audiences in welcoming, accessible public spaces to target populations that might not otherwise have access to or experience with premier live artistic comedic entertainment. It's signature summer series, "Laughter in the Park," is the only program of its kind and NYL estimates having entertained over 25,000 New Yorkers and visitors. Each year it creates a vital space for residents to come together using comedy to explore the most critical issues of our city and times. Though, “Laughter in the Park 2020” was postponed due to Covid-19, NYL was still able to host an online, accessible show called “Laughter in Lockdown.” Connecting through comedy improves the mental and physical health of New Yorkers and acts as a community-building opportunity for those who need it most while also encouraging comedy's next generation and providing greater opportunities for comedic artists to grow their audiences and influence. Suzette also created the #STRONGBLACKBOOBS initiative as a place for others to go for breast cancer information based on her experiences, comedy, self-esteem boosters and support for communities of color. After losing her mother to breast cancer 30 years ago and then being diagnosed herself she has made it her goal to use this comedic, empowering approach on social media to raise awareness for communities of color and breast health. Phoebe, Ijeoma Olou, & Phil Robinson Are Doing Their Best
It's crunch time, boos! The 2020 election is coming up. Many of us are scared and stressed and I called on two of the smartest people I know to talk about the issues of the day. Yep, that's right! We have another super sized episode of Black Frasier! So make some popcorn and Lipton iced tea and dig in. First up! Phil and Phoebe break down what exactly he does as a local politician, his career in the non-profit space and, of course, they give each other a hard time because that's what siblings do. Next, Phoebe chats with Ijeoma about local politics in Seattle, defunding the police, and as per usual, she gives us some tools on how to show up more intentionally in our communities. Plus, both Phil and Ijeoma answer some top notch listener questions.  Ijeoma Oluo Details: Twitter/Instagram: @IjeomaOluo Preorder Ijeoma's upcoming book MEDIOCRE: THE DANGEROUS LEGACY OF WHITE MEN : https://bit.ly/3dDteAg State Rep Phil Robinson's Details: Instagram/Twitter: @robinsonforoh Website: https://bit.ly/3ofjdhJ   -- Black Owned Business: Melanin Haircare WEBSITE : https://bit.ly/2IMG9ob INSTAGRAM: https://bit.ly/2IGiBRD TWITTIER: https://bit.ly/3dE9wo1 FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/3jdh9D1 PINTEREST: https://bit.ly/3jgpgi2 -- SUBSCRIBE to get the latest Black Frasier Episodes: YouTube: https://bit.ly/33yXkBX Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3a787Vd Spotify: https://spoti.fi/33FG1PA Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/33B9Gt9 Stitcher: https://bit.ly/2F241SS iHeart: https://ihr.fm/3kkY8Ah Pandora: https://pdora.co/31z7Ru6 Deezer: https://bit.ly/3gFwpYN Connect with Phoebe Online at: Visit the Phoebe Robinson WEBSITE: https://bit.ly/3kxHrlo Like Phoebe Robinson FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/3fCjnKg Follow @PhoebeRobinson on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/33DParN Follow Phoebe Robinson on INSTAGRAM: https://bit.ly/3a5xVAT Follow Black Frasier on INSTAGRAM: https://bit.ly/31pKiUC -- About Black Frasier: BLACK FRASIER.
