Hey beardos, this week we take a moment to catch up on some news stories that caught our interest over the last month but we just couldn’t find a space for them in the episode. We’ll try to make sense of the bizarre food labeling law developments in the EU: Vegan Burger good! Plant based milk bad? But also Oatly can’t copyright their claim that their product is “like milk, but made for humans” because everyone knows cows milk is bad? It’s enough to make your head spin! Plus attempt to sort out our feelings over an interested marking tactic from This, and do some extensive follow up on the Denmark mink situation.

IFS and Masculinity and Jericho Circles with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams
On today's episode, I chat with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams. Steve, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Suffolk University in Boston, has taught, researched, and written on crime, justice and social control for three decades. He is Level 2 IFS trained and has presented his use of the IFS model inside prisons at multiple IFS annual conferences and has written articles in the IFS newsletter, The Outlook. In 2002, he founded the Jericho Circle Project, a non-profit organization that seeks to 'bring down the walls' by creating men's support groups in correctional facilities. Since the project began, almost 1000 incarcerated men have sat in Jericho Circles in county, state, and federal correctional institutions in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island. Glenn participated in the Jericho groups when he was incarcerated for 21 years and later met Steve in a different context. Glenn now 'pays it forward' with his organization, Our House Boston. Glenn is Level One IFS trained and is passionate about spreading the word about our True Essence, especially to black men in urban settings. Glenn is a reentry advocate and community investor who works with various individuals, families, organizations and businesses to raise awareness about and create solutions to the challenges of incarceration and prisoner reintegration. This conversation is AMAZING. I cannot convey this in words. Here are some themes: 'Self' Discovery Masculinity Men's work inside prisons, power of vulnerability, and speaking for parts 'Climbing out of the man box'/Taking off masks The importance of power in manliness for Black Men Glenn states, "Who I pretend to be (what my community and society says I need to be in order to survive) and my Essence are not the same thing." And, "IFS offers the opportunity for Self Discovery and Self Exploration (inside and outside of prison). Discovering that my shame and guilt are parts of me and do not have to define who I am at my core." To find more about Jericho circle go to Check out this 90 minute documentary on the nature of their group work that was filmed at California State Prison Sacramento. That film, produced by the group that initially mentored them in the work (Inside Circle), will give you a taste of the kind of work done (albeit at a somewhat higher level of intensity than is typical of Jericho Circle’s groups) on their weekends. Gender: A Wider Lens Podcast

7 - Collective Collusion
In therapy, collusion happens when the therapist (consciously or unconsciously) participates in a client’s bid to avoid an important issue instead of helping the client to gain a deeper understanding or take a more helpful perspective. In the collective, society has colluded with the fantasy of gender identity, much to the detriment of dysphoric and transgender people themselves. Sasha and Stella discuss what factors contribute to this kind of collusion and how individuals have the power to steer us towards a more truthful and thoughtful direction. Links: JK Rowling Essay: ( Pluralistic Ignorance: “When no one believes, but everyone thinks that everyone believes.” ( The Asch Conformity Test: ( The Milgram Experiment: ( Carl Rogers, the Core Conditions in Person-centered therapy: ( Diverse thresholds:,what%20they%20say%20or%20do (,what%20they%20say%20or%20do) Californian policy congenital growth: ( Extended Notes What does collusion mean in this context? What’s the difference between a good therapist and a bad therapist? They are able to step back when they’ve colluded with their client. There is collective collusion among therapists as well as collective collusion among languages. Stella showcases how the JK Rowling situation is the perfect example of collective collusion. She is not transphobic! A person-centric therapist might be very reluctant to give honest feedback and to challenge their client. They’re afraid that they’ll rupture the client's trust if they question whether someone with gender dysphoria is a boy or a girl. However, this approach can lead a client to feel stuck and they become a prisoner to their own narrative. It’s important the therapist doesn’t take the word of their client at face-value. Take a bird’s eye view of it instead. People are more than just a walking identity. It’s important for a client to explore all the different reasons why they might have an issue. Stella outlines how therapists fall into collusion instead of exploring the client’s feelings and emotions. It happens because they’re very empathic toward their feelings. By trying to protect your client, you end up hurting them because reality will always hit hard. Stella shares her thoughts on trans therapists and what they need to be aware of when it comes to collusion. It’s easy to be kind short-term, but to be kind long-term is preparing your client for success by helping them realize who they are. Humans will always take advantage of loopholes! It’s easy to fall into “the wrong opinion” when everyone around you touts it as truth! What does pluralistic ignorance mean? Humans follow the status quo, even if logically it doesn’t make sense to follow it. Therapists want to be part of the good side of history, but they need to take a step back and look at the best interest of the client. What makes people stand up for what’s right when everyone is following the status quo?... Support this podcast

The COVID battle of the sexes
The determination of biological sex occurs at the genetic level in which one of our 46 chromosomes can either be an X or a Y. But that one variance can lead to countless differences between the two. Now, thanks to COVID-19, we have another as it has become clear XX and XY respond to the virus differently.  Last year, Eileen Scully outlined those differences and I’ve asked her to come on the show to share them with us. She is an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and has been researching infection, immunity, and biological sex for years particularly in terms of HIV infection. Now she’s taking us on a journey into the possible consequences of COVID-19 infection based on biological sex.  While I do what I can to get to the bottom of the differences, I’m sure you will have questions. Which is why I hope you reach out to me on Twitter, by Email, or via voice message at Just follow the link below and send me your thoughts.  Twitter: @JATetro Email: Voice Message: Guest: Eileen Scully Biological sex and COVID-19 Title: Considering how biological sex impacts immune responses and COVID-19 outcomes Link: See for privacy information.
