Why we must confront the painful parts of US history | Hasan Kwame Jeffries
13 min
To move forward in the United States, we must look back and confront the difficult history that has shaped widespread injustice. Revisiting a significant yet overlooked piece of the past, Hasan Kwame Jeffries emphasizes the need to weave historical context, no matter how painful, into our understanding of modern society -- so we can disrupt the continuum of inequality massively affecting marginalized communities.

1. Thousands of farmers allowed to enter Delhi for a planned protest against new farm laws after a morning of clashes with the police at the border with Haryana. Even after the Delhi Police announced that they could enter, escorted by cops, teargassing and water sprays continued, apparently to control crowds. Some farmers were reportedly injured in the action. Groups of farmers, walking with tractors carrying food and essential supplies, had been trying to enter Delhi from multiple points, defying barricades, many wrapped in barbed wire, and trenches dug up near key roads. Farmers' organisations said they had been 'given safe passage' into Delhi and allowed to protest at a ground in Burari near the capital's outskirts. 2. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar loses his cool at Tejashwi Yadav in the assembly after the opposition leader raises criminal cases against him in a cutting attack days after the bitterly fought state elections. "He's talking nonsense, he's lying," Mr Kumar fumed. "I keep listening because he is the son of a friend who's like a brother to me. I don't say anything. Who made his father leader of the legislative party does he know? Who made him Deputy Chief Minister? When there were allegations against him, I asked him to explain. He didn't so I had to leave," he said, referring to their 2017 split. 3. People's Democratic Party leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti alleges she has been "illegally detained yet again" and that her daughter Iltija has been "placed under house arrest". 4. The demolition of a part of actor Kangana Rananut's office in a bungalow in Mumbai by the city's civic body "is nothing but malice in law", the Bombay High Court has said cancelling the notice as it heard the actor's petition against the demolition in September. In a big win for the actor, Ms Ranaut will also be compensated for the damage caused by the demolition. 5. Australia end India's defiant 5th wicket stand.

584: Farmers Enter Delhi With Their Protest, Will The Centre Yield?
It seems that the Centre is ready for talks as thousands of farmers from Punjab marched into Delhi against the three Central farm laws, on 27 November. Although the Centre hasn't formally commented, or reached out to farmer organisations, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal tweeted, “The central government is always ready for talks.” After a few tense days at the Delhi-NCR border, the Delhi police spokesperson Aish Singhal announced in the late afternoon of 27 November that the protesting farmers will be allowed to hold their protest at the Nirankari Samagam Ground in North-West Delhi. In the past couple of days, over 30 farmer bodies including several thousands of women have been attempting to stream into Delhi through different routes with their trucks and trolleys carrying rations and other essentials determined to hold the protest for as long as it takes to get the government's attention. They have demanded for the three new farm laws to be scrapped and MSP be legalised. But before the farmers were let in, barricades, barbed wires, water cannon and tear gas shells were used to deter them from entering the capital. From Tikri to Singhu to Faridabad to Kalindi Kunj — all borders were sealed off. Hundreds of police personnel from the RAF, CRPF and the Delhi Police were deployed and what was supposed to be a peaceful march to the capital got violent in the outskirts of Delhi as water cannons and tear gas shells were countered with stone pelting. As the farmers carry on with their protest, in this podcast we'll bring you farmer voices from ground zero. Tune in!
