Pipelines, First Nations and reconciliation: Hearing another view
Play • 30 min

Recent pipeline protests and rail blockades were intended to show solidarity with First Nations. But what about the aspirations of those First Nations who support--and depend on--resource development as a means to end poverty and enrich communities?

Crystal Smith is the Haisla Chief Councillor and chair of the First Nations LNG Alliance. She discusses the importance of LNG and the Coastal GasLink pipeline to her community: how it is helping the Haisla and neighbouring First Nations support their members with training, jobs, social programs, and programs to preserve traditional culture and language. She also questions why more stories like the Haisla's aren't part of the national discussion on pipelines, Indigenous reconciliation and resource development.
