Today, we’re talking about how to “deal” with your in-laws so you can have the best relationship possible. I’m so excited because my friend (and fellow Ramsey Personality) Dr. John Delony joins us to talk about navigating relationships in our lives. Then, we’ll spend some time journaling about what we can do to apply this truth to our lives.

 

5 Rules to Have the Best Relationship With Your In-laws

There's one particular relationship that research shows is the hardest of all: the relationship between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law. I've even done some reading on this because I'm asked about it so much. People really struggle with their relationship with their in-laws.

That’s why I worked with my own mother-in-law to come up with five rules for improving your relationship. If both people do this, the relationship will improve:

  1. Appreciate everything.
  2. Invest in the relationship.
  3. Communicate.
  4. Be confident.
  5. Put yourself in their shoes.

How many things would be solved if we just loved each other? How many things would be easier if we just thought of how we could show love? It's so easy to get frustrated with family and take them for granted, but family’s also a sacred relationship and a role that no one else gets to fill. That's why it's on us to lead the relationship. Don't sit back and take a passive approach. We have an opportunity to love first. So, I've got a few questions for you as you process this and think about how to apply it to your own life:

109. 18 Years of Marriage: 10 Lessons We've Learned
I cannot believe it. Jesse and I have been married for 18 years. Our relationship is officially an adult. In so many ways we both feel like it couldn’t possibly have been that long and then in others it seems like so much longer. One thing we know for sure is that we’ve learned a LOT along the way, and we’re sharing it all. As with most things, we decided to start with food. Jesse has definitely learned to simply buy me the food. Regardless of whether or not I said I was hungry. You see, I just never know how hungry I am (or am not) until the food is actually in front of me. #momlife right? All kidding aside, one thing we’ve worked really hard on is being able to talk about our feelings to one another without constantly accusing each other of causing pain. Rather than saying you make me feel this or that, we instead step back and reframe the pain. So we’ll say, when you did this thing, it made me feel this way. This has helped our communication so much! In that same vein, being able to laugh with one another is the glue that holds everything together. Even if it’s at some really terrible dad jokes. Laughter is a balm for the soul and it really makes marriage so much more enjoyable. Something that we’ve found just in the last few years is that we need the time and space to pursue individual interests. Being able to have our own things has helped strengthen our marriage because we have new things to be invested in and interested in with each other.
