What Does Food Have To Do With COVID-19?
What Does Food Have To Do With COVID-19? | This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic If we as a population were healthier (think less obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.), the evidence supports that we’d be faring much better throughout this pandemic.  Unfortunately, in the United States, only 12% of us in the US are metabolically healthy, putting us at higher risk of worse outcomes from COVID-19. Of course, a major driver of chronic diseases and the risks they create is our food system. We can’t expect to be a resilient population if we aren’t feeding our bodies real food with real nutrients we can use to function optimally.  In this mini-episode, we revisit two conversations Dr. Hyman had with his colleagues Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian and Dr. Elizabeth Boham at the beginning of the pandemic about how food and nutrition are inextricably linked to COVID-19. Dr. Boham also shares how to use food as medicine for immune support. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian is a cardiologist, Jean Mayer Professor of Nutrition and Medicine, and Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, the oldest and most renowned graduate school of nutrition in North America. He has authored more than 300 scientific publications on the dietary priorities to reduce cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity in the US and globally; and on evidence-based systems innovations and policies to effectively reduce these burdens. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. #171: All Things Covid: Vitamin D, Masks and More with Chris Kresser
All Things Covid: Vitamin D, Masks and More with Chris Kresser As humans, we often fall into black and white thinking. It can be easy to let the constant waterfall of media information and social snippets wash over us without stopping to think of the full context. In this age of COVID-19, though, it’s more important than ever to pause and look at what the science really has to say. When we slip into confirmation bias and seek out answers that solidify what we already believe, we lose the ability to think critically. Now, more than ever, is the time to change that so we can overcome this pandemic. That’s exactly what Dhru and Chris Kresser talk about on this episode of The Broken Brain Podcast.  Chris Kresser is the CEO of Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine, the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, the creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure. He is known for his in-depth research uncovering myths and misconceptions in modern medicine and providing natural health solutions with proven results. Chris was named one of the 100 most influential people in health and fitness by Greatist.com, and his blog is one of the top-ranked natural health websites in the world. He recently launched Kresser Institute, an organization dedicated to reinventing healthcare and reversing chronic disease by training healthcare practitioners in Functional and Evolutionary Medicine.  In this episode, Dhru and Chris jump into an open conversation about the most pressing COVID topics and what the latest research is showing. Starting with vitamin D, they look at some dramatic results of several studies, with the takeaway being that a majority of COVID patients have been found to have vitamin D deficiency, and those who are vitamin D deficient have higher inflammatory markers and a higher risk of death. They discuss the science behind mask wearing and why it’s a helpful piece of stopping the spread of coronavirus, but only one piece. They also talk about the latest findings of the vaccine trials and what we know, and don’t know.  In this episode, we dive into:  -Vitamin D levels among asymptomatic and critically ill COVID-19 patients and the correlation with inflammatory markers (12:56)  -Randomized control trial of vitamin D (17:26) -Vitamin D testing and supplement recommendations (32:40)  -Why masks are getting so much attention when the data is nuanced (35:28)  -The research on COVID-19 and masks (46:06) -COVID-19 vaccine—what we know and what we don’t know (1:08:14)  -Concerns around the safety of a vaccine when it’s developed so quickly (1:15:37)  -Oxford AstraZeneca phase III vaccine trial and how it differs from Pfizer and Moderna vaccine trials (1:30:42) -Rapid at home COVID testing (1:41:01) -What you can do today to take control of your health (1:49:03)  For more on Chris Kresser, be sure to follow him on Instagram @chriskresser, on Facebook @chriskresserlac, on Twitter @chriskresser, on YouTube @chriskresser, and through his website https://chriskresser.com. 624 - How to Be a Supportive Partner
In this episode, we look at how to be a supportive partner.  Written By: Sophie Sumpter | https://www.instagram.com/sorosum/ Sponsor:  Head over to _www.betterhelp.com/tinyleaps_ and use the discount code tiny leaps to get 10% off your first month. That's  _www.betterhelp.com/tinyleaps_ coupon code tiny leaps. The Problem: Choosing to share your life with a romantic partner looks different for everyone. Cohabitating, long distance relationships, choosing to have children or not. There are a lot of choices and none of them are necessarily “right” or “wrong”. However, there is one common denominator among every successful relationship: your partner will one day face challenges that are outside of your control and outside of your experience. So how do you support them when you can’t move a roadblock out of their path? Is it even your responsibility to move it? Digging Deeper: Throughout the course of your relationship, the type of support that your partner needs may change. Mental illness, chronic pain, cancer, or family deaths name a few of the unpredictable things that may throw your relationship for a loop. According to the National Law Review, stress about finances, parenting disagreements, and household responsibilities are some of the most common challenges faced in relationships. To make things worse, COVID-19 has heightened anxieties leading to an uptick in divorce rates (National Law Review, 2020). According to the New York Post, the number of people seeking divorce from March to June of this year was 34% higher than March to June of 2019 (Rosner, 2020). Newly weds seem to be the demographic seeking divorce at a higher rate than ever before (Rosner, 2020). The Solution Supporting your partner through a difficult situation involves first realizing that we all have problems that we go through. This seems like a general statement that we are all aware of, but it’s important to acknowledge and be reminded of. Our partner’s struggles may be similar to or the same problem as the ones we are facing, but their experience is entirely independent of our own. It can be easy to ignore this when we get so caught up in our own day to day struggle. We may experience the exact same thing as another person, such as the pandemic, but no two experiences are exactly the same. SOURCES: Medina, Raphael. Supporting Your Partner: Long Term Illness. 352: It's Time To Create Your 10 Year Vision
Do you have a clear vision for what the next 10 years of your life will be like? If not, would you like my help creating one? If you have one, do you think it would be beneficial to revisit it? Last week, I came across a journal entry I wrote back in 2016. It was titled “The Miracle Morning Movement 10 Year Vision.” When I reread it, I was inspired by some of the possibilities, amazed to realize how much of it had already come true, and reminded that we can all benefit from creating and maintaining a 10-year vision that drives our behavior each day. I want you to be able to look back on this moment and say to yourself, “I did it. I got clear on the life I was committed to creating, what I needed to do, who I needed to become to create the most fulfilling life I could imagine, and I made it happen.” Today, Shawn joins me to talk about the astounding problems with our healthcare system, the importance of diet and exercise in illness prevention, and the major cultural changes that need to happen to help us become a healthier society. KEY TAKEAWAYS * First, you’re going to hear a detailed example of a 10-year vision to show you what it looks like when things come to fruition. * Then we’re going to explore why creating a 10-year vision is worth your time. * Finally, you’re going to learn a step-by-step process you can use to create a 10-year vision of your own. In order to grow, you need failure. Understand and accept failure as a part of life. We often experience that learning is more effective in failure than in success because failure teaches us what works and what does not. When we embrace our strengths or limitations – we become better. People are often so afraid they’ll fail at something that they don’t try. Don’t be one of those people. Everyone has failed at something in his or her life, but not everyone tries again and again. World hard every day to reach your goals and you will. Keep going and you will find success. Subscribe! How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams   [Self-Growth] {#249} #BriefAudioBook - 30 November 2020 How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big Kind of the Story of My Life Scott Adams 17 min read overview Have you ever taken a look back at your life and wondered why you haven't gone much further along in life? Well, we've all had one or two instances when we thought we should have gotten more out of life than we currently do. There are times when we take a look back at the previous two or three years and wonder where it all went wrong. But in most cases, nothing went wrong. We're just not patient enough to see that every failure we encounter comes with bits of opportunities and lessons essential to set us up for greater success. Scott Adams has likely failed at more things than anyone else you’ve ever met. So how did he go from hapless office worker and serial failure to the creator of Dilbert, one of the world’s most famous syndicated comic strips, in just a few years? In “How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big”, Adams shares the strategy he has used since he was a teen to invite failure in, to embrace it, then pick its pocket.
